What to do in Andorra
Andorra is one of the smallest countries in Europe, lodged between Spain and France in the Pyrenees. Andorra is known for its skiing and super-low-tax shopping but there is more to be enjoyed in this quaint little country. All the fresh mountain air has resulted in the Andorran’s having one of the highest life expectancies in the world. Andorra is a country for out-door activity, from hiking to skiing to para-gliding, it is all possible in this Pyrenean state, either way, you won’t be disappointed.
Things to do in Andorra
Head to Andorra la Vella’s main street and it might seem as though the entire country is just one big shopping centre. Perfume, tobacco and electronic items are tax free so you can shop till you drop.
Visit Casa de la Vall
Casa de la Vall (Town Hall) is the most famous building in Andorra. Built as a stately home in the early 1500s, it was purchased and became the parliamentary house in 1702. The Parliament no longer meets here, however; they recently moved to a modern glass structure across the piazza.
Hike the Trails
Andorra is a mountainous paradise. There are over 50 trail routes for hiking in Andorra, and five major European long-distance trekking routes cross through the principality. Many hikers seek out the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley. This remote valley covers nearly 10% of the principality and has tremendous natural beauty. The Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley has been recognized as Andorra’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Ski the Mountain Slopes
Andorra can be quiet in the summer, but in winter, it comes to life. Most skiers make their way to the Vallnord resort, which is made up of three different mountains. And with so many great bars and restaurants around you can enjoy some amazing après!
Soak in a Spa
In the Escaldes-Engordany Parish, just across the river from capital of Andorra la Vella, an eye-catching building that pierces the sky. This is home to the massive Caldea-INUU spa complex. When built, it was Europe’s largest hot springs and spa complex with over 65,000 square feet of spa space!
Whether you visit in the tourist season or not, Andorra’s natural beauty is always on display. The mountainous terrain is broken only by sparkling mountain streams and gentle forest. This is one of the most beautiful countries I’ve ever been to and I can’t wait to go back one day!
